Mixed Berry Buttercream Frosting
This mixed berry frosting is full of real fruit flavor and a pretty pop of pink color, no food dye needed. If you’re looking for a dye-free frosting, this one’s for you.
Cooking the berries down first concentrates the flavor and keeps the frosting thick and smooth. A splash of lime juice brightens everything up and balances the sweetness.
Once the berry mixture is cool, it blends right into a classic buttercream base to make a frosting that’s slightly tart, not too sweet, and super versatile. It’s perfect on vanilla, lemon, or berry cakes, and makes any dessert feel a little more special with its naturally vibrant color.
Let’s whip up some naturally colorful frosting!

Steps to make Mixed Berry Frosting
1. Combine fresh berries (cutting larger ones if necessary) and lime juice in a small saucepan.

2. Cook over medium-low heat for approximately 10-15 minutes, stirring regularly to prevent burning. Continue until berries break down and mixture thickens to a paste consistency. Allow as much liquid to evaporate as possible.

3. Set aside the berry mixture and let it cool completely to room temperature.
4. Beat together the softened butter, salt, and about half the powdered sugar in a stand mixer on low speed until well combined.

5. Incorporate the remaining powdered sugar. The mixture will appear quite thick at this stage.

6. Add the cooled berry reduction and mix initially on low speed. Once incorporated, increase to medium speed and beat until the frosting becomes smooth and fluffy. If needed, adjust consistency with additional powdered sugar.

7. Spoon the finished frosting into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip for decorating.
