Homemade German Chocolate Cake Frosting (Coconut Pecan Frosting)

German Chocolate Cake frosting is not chocolate at all, but a rich, caramel-like mixture with shredded coconut and chopped pecans. It’s thick, buttery, and with a great texture and flavor.

Obviously, it’s the classic topping for German Chocolate Cake, but don’t stop there German chocolate frosting is great on brownies, cupcakes, or even spread between cookies.

Let’s make some German Chocolate frosting from scratch!

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup evaporated milk
  • 2 egg yolks
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • ¾ cup pecans

Steps to make Coconut Pecan Frosting

1. Whisk together evaporated milk, egg yolks, brown sugar and butter in a large saucepan.

2. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to simmer. Continue simmering for 2-3 minutes until the mixture thickens noticeably.

3. Remove the pan from heat and stir in vanilla, coconut and pecans until well combined.

4. Cool the mixture completely to room temperature before using as a filling or topping.
